Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis

Also known as nonspecific vaginitis or Gardnerella.

Cause

BV is usually due to an upset in balance among the different types of bacteria normally present in the vagina. The bacteria that normally resides in the vagina is lactobacillus, however, with BV there can be increased amounts of gardnerella vaginalis, baceroides, mobiluncus and mycoplasma hominis. Having an IUD may increase the risk of BV.

Symptoms

An abnormal amount of a fishy or foul-smelling discharge is the primary symptom. However, some women may experience no symptoms at all.

Diagnosis

A sample of vaginal fluid can be examined under a microscope to detect the presence of the organisms.

Treatment

Usually treated with antibiotics such as metronidazole or clindamycin. For recurring cases, the treatment of the male partner may be helpful.

Sexually Transmitted Can be, but not always.
